2023’s Projects

In 2023, CEDBCAM-RI moved from research to wider impact. We hosted one of the first bacterial genomics and bioinformatics workshops in Cameroon, opened our laboratory practice to secondary school pupils, and continued the research projects funded in 2021 and 2022.

Workshop on Bioinformatics Applications in Genomic Surveillance · “Enable, Empower, Succeed”

A three-day workshop on the genomic surveillance of bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Central Africa lacks people trained to analyse genomic data, so the workshop used open-source, web-based tools that run without expensive computing infrastructure.

Dates: 22–24 February 2023
Organisers: Dr Luria Leslie Founou and Prof. Raspail Carrel Founou Zangue (CEDBCAM-RI)
Supported by: SeqAfrica and the Fleming Fund

Pupil Empowerment Outreach

Bridging the gap between theoretical science and laboratory practice

One hundred Form 1 pupils discovered laboratory work through hands-on training in micropipetting and microscopy, together with sessions on personal hygiene and infectious disease prevention. A cost-sharing model covering consumables makes the programme sustainable.

Research projects in progress

Projects funded in 2021 and 2022

Our teams continued the research funded in previous years: MEPOGENSA (Streptococcus agalactiae in pregnant women and neonates), CAREFOOD (antibiotic-resistant foodborne pathogens, One Health), MOTION (ESBL-producing Enterobacterales in pregnant women and neonates), TARGET (neonatal infections) and FIT-BI (rapid bacterial identification).
